COIS Backup Info

COIS Servers

We recommend that you save your files on a network drive, such as G or H. These network drives reside on COIS file servers, which are backed up daily onto DAT tapes.

Please note that we do not maintain tape archives. We keep about two weeks of information on our tape backups.

COIS SQL servers are backed up daily onto DAT tape. COIS web servers are backed up twice a week onto DAT tape. We keep about two weeks of history for these servers as well.

Q: Is my computer being backed up?

A: Yes, certain files on your computer are backed up using the UC Backup service.

Q: When am I being backed up?

A: We have asked UC Backup to schedule everyone at night, so as not to effect the network during the day. So in order to be backed up, please leave your computer on overnight. Be sure to log off your computer, and turn your monitor off to save power.

Q: Is everything on my computer backed up?

A: No, not everything is backed up since we are charged per MB of storage.

Q: What is being backed up?

A: Your Eudora mailboxes and messages, and your personal profile settings -- including your Desktop folders and files -- will be backed up. Internet Explorer "favorites" and Netscape bookmarks are also backed up.

Q: Are certain files excluded from the backup?

A: Yes. The excluded files and folders are music and video files, such as MP3s, AVIs, and MPEGs, and program and system files and directories. Anything in the "Program Files" folder, for example, will not be backed up. Please contact COIS for a more complete explanation of the include-exclude files.

Q: What about my Eudora email?

A: In a standard configuration, your Eudora email is stored in the "C:/Eudora/(your CalNetID)" folder, and is therefore backed up. If COIS did not set up your PC, or if someone changed your PC setup, please contact COIS to verify that your Eudora email is being backed up.

Q: What about files on my other drives?

A: Other drives are not included by default. Although we can include these drives as necessary, you will need to demonstrate that there is a legitimate work-related need for this.

Q: Who do I contact if I have questions about my computer backups?

A: If you have any concerns about whether your computer is being backed up regularly, or whether the correct files are being backed up, please contact the COIS Help Desk for your location.
